Here is the case: I have windows vista business, and I wish to upgrade to ultimate. I know that microsoft allows you to upgrade easily by paying online and being provided with another serial no, but I can't check that now, since I don't have vista business installed yet I'd like to know that price first.
You can easily check it, because they list the price before you click the "buy" or call the Microsoft number. I thought i'd ask here before calling them. Just call them. Their customer service lines, which are in Canada, are very helpful on just such issues Also, and upgrade from an upgrade does not qualify Paul S Robson. Business Upgrade to Ultimate kritonas said:. Click to expand Microsoft has not yet fulfilled their promises on what it will do, compared with that which they say it is capable.
It will not be useful until long after Service Pack 1 is released Similar threads. I think I "tricked" it into working Factory installed with Vista Business audio worked fine - Upgraded to Vista Ultimate audio didn't work I'll include all of the details of what I did below Click on the "Driver" tab.
Click "Uninstall" - Click ok to any warnings, etc. Now right click anywhere in the "Device Manager" window and select "Scan for Hardware Changes" The timing of this is important.
Allow it to find the new audio device which shouldn't take but a second. It'll then start scanning some "common" microsoft folder for the driver. You may see a quick notification come from the system tray. Click on that to open the driver scan window. Make sure to do this as quick as possible, as you do not want it to find the driver that Microsoft wants to install. It won't work, but will think it does work Now you should see the "Sound Video and game controllers" section again.
It will be a generic Windows Driver. For me it wasn't working quite yet Right click on the audio device that's listed under "Sound Video and Game Controllers". Select Properties Click on the Driver tab. Click "Update Driver" Select Browse for driver software on your computer. Install a random driver. Make sure it is not the one that Windows wants. EXE and extracted the files to a folder on my D drive. Then I selected this folder when "Browsing for a driver".
My theory is that it just needs to be a driver different from the one that Microsoft thinks it should be using. So you could technically install a print driver if you wanted to.
Now here's the key if it didn't work on number 8. Go back to Device Manager, right click on the sound driver, and select properties. Go back to the Drivers tab, and select "Roll Back". It will roll back to the Microsoft Generic sound driver and it will work. I'm guessing becuase it's not associated with you stopping the scan for a driver this time around.
I've downloaded about 3 different versions of the 5. Tried the first one and it didn't work. It rolled it back to a revision number 4xxx driver. And then the speakers dissapeared and back to the same errors and problems. This driver didn't work either. However it was different in that the version number was 5. Essentially the same "release", but versioned differently. With installing this driver I got a different error message when viewing the device properties.
Which now had a warning triange on it The message had something to do with "could not load the software for this device", which was actually refressing instead of just being told that my "device was working properly. Since this wasn't working either. I decided I would try the "Roll Back" one more time. Which Supprisingly enough But I'll take it!
The Driver version is 6. I don't hook up any type of "High Def" Audio, so I can't verify quality. All I know is that I don't get system beeps anymore, which scare me half to death any time it beeps, and I can listen to audio again.
